about

A short sound sculpture using the "Broken Shards' technique from Maria Chavez's book, Of Technique: Chance Procedures on Turntable. The 12" below is an anonymous singer songwriter’s album gifted to her on her "GoodBye Global Tour" in 2018-19 and no artist name was given. The broken shard is a "vocabulary" lesson record that was broken into 2 pieces, with the spindle hole still in tact. A form of breakage she calls "the most valuable break". When the broken shard is placed on the full 12" below, it creates an 'unintentional song' which allows the performer to control when the 'vocals' or in this case, the vocabulary record, decides to speak. This is not an intentional musical song but rather an unintentional result of a sonic sculpture session. The musicality is inherent in the piece due to the rotating motor and plate.

This sound sculpture was recorded as an artist in residence with EMPAC, a 2 year residency program that will now span until 2022 due to Covid.
