BOOK OBJECT- Of Technique: Chance Procedures on Turntable, 2012

from Maria Chavez

Maria Chavez's book on her abstract turntablism practice from 2012 is regularly used in University courses all over the world that teach improvisation and sound art. This book is considered the first full text on abstract turntablism performance practice in existence. This batch is the 9th pressing, at 100 books per pressing there are now 800+ of this self-released book all over the world.

This book also serves as Maria's first "sound based object" as she did not release albums/ sound objects from 2004-2019. Not participating in the music economic structure of releasing play back audio for the majority of her career has made her work known only by word of mouth and through live performances which are now considered legendary.

The book is a Conceptual Sound Art album that deals with one's "inner ear/ inner dialogue". The essays and illustrations in this book allows the reader to imagine the sounds described using their imagination. As they read about each technique they are visually able to imagine the sounds with each illustration which were all derived by chance. If you imagine a sound from the book you are "playing" the album. But in your mind.

If the reader decides to act each technique out by performing each method on a turntable then they are literally performing the album for themselves.

The album exists in your mind with your inner dialogue and imagination or literally from a turntable should you decide to play/ participate.

As an interactive sculpture, pages with illustrations are encouraged to be torn from the book to assist the reader to create their own abstract turntablism works. This interaction allows the book to change over time without Maria's intentions. Every book becomes the shape that the owner chooses with every sound imagined or literally performed live. With this book object/ conceptual album anyone can become an abstract turntablist or simply learn a unique approach to abstract turntablism. ENJOY!
